Parisian Chic, Laduree

Knowing how much we love sweets around here, we finally made it to Maison Laduree on the Upper East Side for their famous French Macarons.

We went on a Saturday, so there was line to get in, but it was definitely worth the wait.
The boutique is so Chic and French in every way.  The Macaron trees were gorgeous.

Everything was pastel and perfect.

Everything was so gorgeous, it was so hard to chose what we wanted.

We bought a small box of these flavors:
Orange Blossom
Melon
Strawberry Candy
Salted Caramel
Dark Chocolate
Coffee

I was tiptoeing through the Tulips on Park Ave with my Laduree bag in tow.

Have you tried Laduree?

Grown Up Ice Cream Truck

Van Leeuwen
My grandfather had a General Store and I grew up as a Kid in a Candy Shop.
He had candy and treats and best of all...Ice Cream.
Hence my love for ice cream began.
So now that Spring is here and Summer is approaching I thrive for that
delightful dessert, that makes me feel like a kid again.

In NYC, there are tons of ice cream options, but Van Leeuwen is top on the list.
It's an Ice Cream truck for Grown Ups!
Van Leeuwen
They are an Artisan Ice Cream establishment using only the freshest ingredients and all natural flavors.  The Flavors are absolutely pure and delicious.
Van Leeuwen
They Van Leeuwen truck was parked outside my office the other day and I ran to get some ice cream, unfortunately it was a private event, so they wouldn't serve me.  :(

But that's OK, I'm destined to have my ice cream fix very soon.

Do you love ice cream as much as me?
Have any favorites in the city?

BK: Man on a Mission

Ben Kacmarcik is a man on a mission.  A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, he's an up and coming celebrity chef who was recently featured on the Food Network's hit show Chef Wanted.  He placed second and I honestly think it was the editing b/c you could tell who they wanted to win. I've been on many sets and I've seen it done many times.  Ben was robbed but I'm glad he didn't win, b/c now he has taken it upon himself to implement his order of operations and systems at another amazing New York City restaurant.
That restaurant is Ilili
(Here's a sneak peak at the interior.  I don't want to show you too much, you need to GO.)
Tucked just under the Flatiron Building at 236 5th Avenue we have Ilili.  A Mediterranean marvel located right in the heart of Manhattan.  They boast a magnificent cocktail list that includes a Poison Sumac Margarita and a NOT SO Bloody-Mary that appears clear when served.   Also, they have a plethora of spices from all over the globe, thus allowing Ben's creativity to shine through on the plate.
(facing South)
There's the Flatiron Building in the back.
Cocktail List:
Fresh Meadow  gin / st. germain / mint / cucumber / ginger
Poison Sumac Margarita tequila / orange liqueur pomegranate juice / lime
Phoenician Lemonade citrus vodka / orange liqueur / mint lemon / orange blossom
St. Germain Cocktail cava / elderflower liqueur
From Beirut with Passion basil cilantro mint infused vodka sparkling passion fruit
Black & Blue Bubbles blackberry sorbet / stoli blueberry vodka / cava
Ilili is 3 blocks North of The Flatiron Building.
I had the Poison Sumac Margarita and it was great.  It had a kick of spice and wasn't too strong.  Just enough to take the edge-off during a lunch break in New York.  Also they have really great Natural Sparkling water.   Simple yet very effective.
For starters we had the Baba Ghannouj with eggplant / tahini / olive oil and a few pomegranate seeds for topping.  This is served with in-house freshly made pita.  It is one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth and I've been all over the world.   Ben is doing an incredible job at executing his vision.  He sees himself as the grease that makes the engine run properly and smoothly.  Ben incorporates a step-by-step approach.  He's a cohesive unit inside the insane restaurant world of Manhattan.
Black Iron Shrimp jalapeno / garlic / cilantro
This dish is a great way to start your meal, especially if you're sharing.  Sharing is caring and that's the philosophy at Ilili.  The ambiance is warm and engaging and you can tell the place is ran by people who care and who aren't corporate drones.  NYC is slowly being taken over and it's nice to see something like Ilili do well and remain successful in the City.
THE STAR of the SHOW
Here we have the Branzino Escabeche served with tomato / basil / radish and red onions in a light tomato fumet broth.  Yes, this tasted just as great as it looks.
Finally we have the Pistachio Financier with banana ice cream / tahini fluff and topped with a sugar croquant.  I can't tell you how many restaurants I've been to in NYC and this one is one of the best I have ever been to.  The atmosphere is perfect and they basically have no competition; if you want fresh ingredients, a warm ambiance with great drinks and good food then go to Ilili.  Ben Kacmarcik is doing amazing things on the scene with his implementation of an organic and natural approach.  Ben is going to take partial responsibility with turning Ilili into a brand.  They are looking to grow, and fast.  I see Ilili having a sister location opening up sometime soon.  Maybe in a neighborhood near YOU!
Ben said, "If I'm is going anywhere....it's too far."

Interview with a Chef

When one thinks of a New York City chef they think of sleeve tattoos, big hair, and an even BIGGER EGO, but not Ben Kacmarcik.  On the contrary, upon arrival he wore a white V-neck and some blue jeans. Very quiet and reserved, yet you can see the subtle confidence; by good observation the only thing that shows a sneak at how successful he actually is, is his watch.  I had the opportunity to interview Ben, an up-and-coming NYC chef.   He is immensely talented, completely driven and goal oriented, yet he's also humble and reserved.   Ben's mantra is Hard Work & Dedication and by the looks of his Rose Gold Hublot, it appears to be paying off.  It's his subtle way of saying,
"I'm doing pretty good."
Here are of some of Ben's creations:
Lemon-Caper Sauce, Baby Lettuce and Frisée
Miso Matzoh Ball Soup w/ Shiitake Mushrooms
Ben said, "I take great pride in understanding what operationally makes things function at their highest level without exuding tremendous amounts of energy.  I'm always thinking, is there a better way to do this or are we taking the necessary steps to get the best results?"
Ben told me that he enjoyed the quote I used "A truly wise man knows he knows nothing,"  Ben said,  "I may be in a great position with all things considered, and I know a lot operationally that goes into making a restaurant group, not just a single restaurant function. B/c of this I strive to move up the latter and get better each and every day."  Ben is a genuine person who's proud to have been emotionally supported by his parents throughout his life, but Ben is a self-made man who has been producing results based on the ever-changing New York City culinary jungle for years.

Two Boots Pizza

I went to the UWS the other night to find City Belle a special gift for Christmas.  It was worth the trip, I stumbled upon Two Boots Pizza.  As soon as I stepped inside I went back in time.  It was a neat trip.  All their pizzas are named after random characters and celebrities and they had really eclectic art.  I ate the Duuuuuu'de!
Outside the artsy fartsy pizza parlor.

Yummmm
WHOA!!!
It was a couple blocks outside the train station on 96th street in front of Symphony Space.
 The interior had cool squares.
Well thank you sir..

Cha Cha Chocolate

Hey Y'all!  Sorry it's been awhile.  We have been busy enjoying the unseasonably warm weather in NYC before it gets bitter cold outside.  Can you believe Thanksgiving is in 3 days?  Wow!  Time really flies.
Country Boy surprised me with a treat the other night. He had started his Christmas shopping and came home with this...
A box of Cha Cha Chocolate from KateSpade and MarieBelle chocolates.
You know how much I love both Kate Spade and Chocolate!
In usual Kate Spade fashion, the packaging was amazing.
80% Charming, 20% Rebellious
There were 3 of each flavor-Chocolate Caramel, Fleur de Sel Caramel and Coffee Caramel.
Look at those gorgeous painted chocolates
Country Boy did a good job!
As you can see, we really enjoyed it
Ha!  Chocolate doesn't last long in this household!

Happy Monday,
~City Belle
